Frequently asked questions - Assessors/Verifiers

Q. What is the role of the Assessor?

A.The Assessor’s roles are summarised below:

  • Take the lead in carrying out the assessment
  • Propose scoping and agree with the Verifier
  • Arrange the scoping and verification meetings
  • Collect the evidence and upload it on the Online Assessment Tool (OAT)

Q. How do I become a CEEQUAL Assessor?

A. A member of a project or contract team needs to have attended the 2-day CEEQUAL Assessor Training Course appropriate to the type of assessment to be undertaken – Projects or Term Contracts. Click here for future training courses. Participants must pass the Assessor Training Test at the end of the course. Attendees who pass the end test will become certified CEEQUAL Assessors for Projects or Term Contracts as appropriate.

1-day extension training courses on Term Contracts for existing projects assessors have been arranged. Extension courses for Term Contracts Assessors who wish to use CEEQUAL for Projects will be arranged as demand grows.

Q. Can anyone be a CEEQUAL Assessor?

A.Yes, but it is advised that potential Assessors have experience and interest in civil engineering and construction or environmental issues or both. Although there is no need to be an ‘expert’ in either of these areas to go through the Assessor Training Course, experience has shown that the more successful Assessors tend to be those who already have a solid understanding of civil engineering and/or environmental and social issues in construction. Further details can be found on the Assessor Training page.

Q. Can CEEQUAL help me find a CEEQUAL Assessor?

A. Yes. The recommended route is that the Assessor should be part of the project or contract team, so we recommend that your first choice is to train a suitably qualified member of your staff to become a CEEQUAL Assessor.

However, CEEQUAL can also put you in touch with trained Assessors who could be sub-contracted into the project contract team. When requested to do this, we normally seek interest from CEEQUAL Verifiers (who are also trained Assessors) or experienced Assessors.

Please contact Melanie Manton if you would like us to help you find an Assessor in this way. Note that fees for the contracted-in Assessor's services will be a matter of individual negotiation between you and the chosen Assessor.

Q. What is the role of the Verifier?

A. The Verifier’s roles are summarised below:

  • Agree scoping out with the Assessor
  • Mentor first-time Assessors on their first assessment
  • Respond to the Assessor’s queries
  • Review and verify the completed assessment by
    - Checking the Assessor’s completion of the Online Assessment Tool (OAT)
    - Checking the evidence provided matches the score
    - Comment on where the evidence is not sufficient
    - Mark the score down if felt that the Assessor has been too generous or up if the Assessor’s scoring is felt to be too harsh
    - View selected evidence at the verification meeting and question the Assessor based on the Verifier’s review
    - Adjust scores further as necessary
  • Inform CEEQUAL that the verified assessment is ready for ratification
  • Act as an ambassador for CEEQUAL Ltd and comply with the CEEQUAL Code of Conduct
  • Keep up to date with Scheme updates.

Q. How can I become a CEEQUAL Verifier?

A.To become a CEEQUAL Verifier you need to be a trained Assessor and have carried out at least one full formal verified CEEQUAL Assessment. New Verifiers are recruited by CEEQUAL when the need arises, at which time an open invitation is issued to all Assessors who fit this profile. The process then involves submitting a written application, followed by a two-day training course, which includes continual assessment and a 90-minute exam.
