CEEQUAL for International Projects

Originally developed from the ‘UK & Ireland Edition’ the International Edition of CEEQUAL for Projects is applicable for the assessment of civil engineering, infrastructure, landscaping and public realm projects anywhere in the world. It contains the same question set as the UK Manual with guidance that the CEEQUAL Team believe is widely applicable.

One major feature of the International Edition is the need to undertake weightings exercises to suit the target country’s cultural influences on sustainability performance and the environmental conditions in the locality of the project – see more details below.

Meeting the needs of overseas criteria

Developed through the commitment of many experts working for the benefit of the industry, the International Edition of the Assessment Manual for Projects is applicable anywhere in the world. Its use will reflect commitment to high environmental and social standards and will yield improvements to projects.

With CEEQUAL International, a blanket use of UK & Ireland weightings and scores would be inappropriate because of differences in physical environmental conditions and/or cultural influences, although some project teams in environments similar to the UK have used the UK weighted scores. A project team using CEEQUAL International therefore needs to work with CEEQUAL and others in the area to create a set of weightings for their specific country or region. Click here to learn more about carrying out an international weighting exercise.

The Assessor also needs to take into consideration the local regulations and practice of each country when applying the CEEQUAL questions to their project. In addition, with CEEQUAL’s agreement, the Manual can be translated into other languages, as has already been completed by our Swedish users.

In support of this approach, region-specific references and explanation of terms will increasingly be presented in updateable online documents on the Online Document Library for Assessors & Verifiers. This will enable Assessors to present to clients and colleagues wherever they are working a Manual and addional guidance relevant to their needs and ways of working, whilst maintaining the rigor of the overall CEEQUAL Methodolgy and comparability of results.

Please note: that although CEEQUAL will allow translation of the Manual into another language upon request, it will be at the responsibility of the project team to fund the translation.

Let's get started...

In order to achieve a CEEQUAL Award, the project team (or whom ever is leading the CEEQUAL Assessment: Client, Designer or Contractor) will need to first choose the type of Award they would like to achieve and then choose what Assessment they would like to use in order to reach their Award.

Both the Award and Assessment type will be stated on the final Award certificate.

1. Choosing your Award type:

There are six types of Award available, one for the whole project team, four for parts of the team where not all project partners can take part or where individual members of the team would like to have their own role assessed and recognised separately, and one interim award for clients and designers:

  • Whole Team Award (formerly Whole Project Award) – the full CEEQUAL Award applied jointly by the client, designer and principal contractor(s)

  • Client & Design Award – for a joint application by the client and designer

  • Design Award – for principal designer(s) only

  • Design & Construction Award – for a joint application by the contractor and their designer

  • Construction Award – for principal contractor(s) only

  • Interim Client & Design Award – available en route to a Whole Team Award.

2. Choosing your Assessment type

Currently, CEEQUAL Assessments for Projects (both UK & Ireland, or Internationally-based) are available under Version 5 of the overarching methodology. Version 5 completed the transition of CEEQUAL as an environmental assessment and awards scheme (Version 4) to a sustainability assessment and awards scheme. Due to the vast difference between Version 4 to Version 5, CEEQUAL is offering two types of Assessments for project teams to achieve a CEEQUAL Award:

  • Sustainability Strategy & Performance Assessment (assessing to Sections 1-9)

  • Sustainability Performance Assessment (assessing to Sections 2-9).

The difference between the two available Assessments is whether the project team would wish to assess their project using the newly added 'Project Strategy' section included for the first time as part of Version 5.

The Project Strategy section (which is optional) assesses how the project team has related their project to the wider sustainability agenda surrounding civil engineering and infrastructure projects, and their contribution to ‘sustainable development’. Click here to learn more.

3. Feescales

CEEQUAL for International Projects feescale is dependant on the total civil engineering value of a project and the where it is located in the world. For a discussion about use of CEEQUAL for International Projects please email Roger Venables including these details.

CEEQUAL for International Projects feescale: Zone 1 Europe & Northwest Africa

CEEQUAL for International Projects feescale: Zone 2 Gulf States & Middle East

CEEQUAL for International Projects feescale: Zone 3 Rest of the World

4. Do you have a large or complex project?

For large or complex, multi-package projects, it is possible to undertake separate assessments at the package or sub-project level in a way that enables them to be given individual package scores and for those scores to aggregated into an overall score for the whole project.

To explore this option, please call Ian Nicholson on 01509 363101 to discuss the options available and the associated fees.
