The Project
The A127 Enterprise Corridor between Dunton and Burnt Mills is the largest employment area in Basildon and the Essex Thames Gateway Sub region.

The project was aimed at tackling congestion and improving capacity at critical bottlenecks along, within and approaching the corridor.

The project was divided into three sections:

  • Section 1 – Eastmayne. Involved the construction of additional lane northbound (600m approx) and associated drainage and footpath realignment.
  • Section 2 – Cranes Farm Road. Involved the dualling of existing carriageway (1500m approx) and upgrading of junctions and the creation of a dedicated left turn lane at the roundabout with Eastmayne to ease traffic flows at the junction.
  • Section 3 – A176 Pipps Hill. Involved the upgrading of the east and westbound off slips to increase stacking capacity and traffic flows. Introduction of queue detection linked to advanced warning signs.

Challenges faced by the project team

Ecology
Scope for ecological improvements were limited due to the heavily urbanised nature of the site, but with consultation with the project team’s ecologists and the local planning office an area of land was utilised to be filled and landscaped to create a conservation area with diverse planting and habitat areas to encourage local biodiversity . Tree material from site clearance was saved along with other natural materials and re-used for hibernacula within this newly created area.

Waste Management
Waste minimisation was a key driver on the project with waste streams being separated to enable re-use or recycling.

All of the aggregate used for road sub-base was derived from recycled materials, principally from the concrete from the original road. In all, less than 1% of the total waste material generated from site went to landfill.
