The Project
Project Jära Gård, close to Jönköping
in Sweden, comprises of the construction of a new in-situ
concrete bridge that will create a grade separated junction.
This will ease traffic flow and improve road safety. The client
for the project is the Swedish Transport Administration. Construction
started in May 2011 and was completed during December 2011.
The project was assessed as a Construction-Only Award by Skanska
Sweden with the intent to evaluate the environmental aspects
and performance of the construction works and also to evaluate
the applicability of CEEQUAL International in Sweden.
In addition to the road and the bridge, the
project involves improved noise barriers, and construction
of new pedestrian and cycle routes to improve the accessibility
in the area. A temporary road was constructed to direct the
traffic around the site, and to reduce the impact of the construction-related
traffic.
Challenges
All excavated material has been beneficially reused within the project area, either as fill for noise barriers to reduce noise levels at surrounding residential areas, or to improve landscape integration of the scheme. Material was excavated to maintain the geological characteristics of the soil for reinstatement. New grassland areas, hills and slopes were created to replace paved surfacing.
The project team implemented actions to reduce the need for transport of materials, particularly for earthworks. Such actions, including the use of high precision machinery, reduced the need for unnecessary movement of the material.
The site office was placed in a previous developed area in the outer part of the site with access to existing infrastructure and access roads.
The project was successful in diverting 100% of waste from landfill, waste was segregated into a number of different waste streams, and those that could not be recycled were incinerated in a local district heating plant.
Measures
Examples of measures taken;
- 100% reuse of excavated soil masses within the project
- 100% diversion from landfill.
