The Project

The Bristol Resilience Scheme comprises two pipelines and a pumping station. The scheme is needed to meet both supply needs due to growth and to provide resilience to the existing population in central Bristol.
The scheme is split in to three individual projects:

1. North Bristol Trunk Main Phase 2 – A 450mm diameter 1.3km long pipeline providing for growth in the North Bristol Area
2. Durdham Down Combined Main – A 700mm diameter 10km long pipeline providing for both growth in North Bristol and security of supply to central Bristol.
3. Bristol Resilience Pumping Station – A booster pumping station used to transfer water from the sources in the North southwards and to transfer from south to Almondsbury in the North.
   

Environmental Sustainability:
From the earliest stages of the project the environmental best practice was considered as a priority for the project outputs. Environmental Management Plans were produced early on and updated throughout the design process.

The routing of the buried mains has been designed to minimise the impact on the environment. No trees or significant hedgerows need to be removed and the route has been aligned to avoid environmentally designated areas of land where possible.

The areas where pipes are laid will be reinstated to their original condition once the work has been completed. Where possible and with the land owner’s permission enhancements will be made. This includes enhancements to amenity land such as benches etc and enhancements to the habitat such as the introduction of bird and bat boxes.

Neighbours and stakeholders:
Stakeholder liaison has been a key part of the design process throughout, particularly concerning the 10km long urban pipeline. All interested parties were contacted very early on in the design process and all residents and home owners that will be directly affected by works are being contacted individually.

Waste:
Where possible the volume of waste expected to be produced has been minimised. The designer and client have selected pipe material so that where possible ‘as dug’ material is used as pipe bedding and a bund around the pumping station is being considered to conceal it from neighbours. Any material that is taken from site should be recycled.

Energy and carbon:
A substantial part of the decision on material selection was made based on the carbon footprint of the pipe materials and manufacturing processes.

Transport:
A good relationship has been built with the Bristol City Council Highways department and detailed traffic impact studies have been carried out. Bristol Water and Black & Veatch have been working closely with the council in order to minimise traffic impacts during the construction of the project.
