Project client: Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA)
The project
The new twelve-track railway sidings at Orient Way was built to replace the former Thornton’s Field sidings, an area in the heart of the Olympic Park site, between the Aquatics Centre and Olympic Stadium.
Recycling
Ninety-nine per cent of the demolition and site clearance waste was recycled, including:
- 4,000 tonne of crushed concrete, of which 1,000 tonnes was re-used on site
- 620 tonnes of tarmac
- 180 tonnes of steel
- 20,000 tonnes of previous site ballast was screened and re-used
- All 3,250 yards of track was lifted and re-used.
Renewable energy
As part of the project, the ODA also built a new accommodation block for train drivers which is powered by a wind turbine. Many of the recyclable elements of the track were reused to built the block.
