Outstanding Achievement Awards - 2011 Ceremony

The first Outstanding Achievement Awards presentation took place on 14 March at the ICE. Eight infrastructure and civil engineering projects in the UK were presented with an Outstanding Achievement Award (OAA), with a further three projects picking up a total of nine Highly Commended trophies.

Thirty-four applications were shortlisted and a diverse group of projects were chosen by the judges for their demonstration of genuine excellence:

WINNER – The Olympic Park (for the Park overall)
Highly recommended – Cross Valley Link Road

Land use
WINNER – The Olympic Park (for the north and south areas’ enabling works)
Highly recommended – none

Landscape
WINNER – The Olympic Park (for the primary foul sewer and pumping station)
Highly recommended – Park for Truro

Ecology & Biodiversity
WINNER – The A58 Blackbrook diversion scheme
Highly recommended – Park for Truro, the Olympic Park enabling works, Parc Cybi (water issues)

Energy & Carbon
WINNER – none
Highly recommended – Granville Industrial Estate (material use)

Transport
WINNER – none
Highly recommended – none

Archaeology and Cultural Heritage
WINNER – Parc Cybi Business Park
Highly recommended – the Olympic Park enabling works

Waste Management
WINNER – The Harefield to Southall gas pipeline project
Highly recommended – Parc Cybi

Effects on Neighbours
WINNER – Moneymore flood protection scheme
Highly recommended – none

Community Relations
WINNER – The Castleford footbridge won the category for community relations.
Highly recommended – Moneymore flood protection scheme

No Awards or commendations were given in two categories - Energy & Carbon, and Transport, due to the nature of the Outstanding Achievement Awards. The judges decided that if no project outstandingly demonstrated pinnacle best-practice performance in the section applied for, then no Outstanding Achievement Award would be made. This decision of the judges reinforced the standing of the ten Outstanding Achievement Awards made.
